The first room that either sells a property or puts potential home buyers off is the kitchen – simply because it’s a place where people spend a great deal of time and they want to spend that time in a bright, cheerful, modern and fresh environment.
Kitchen Bonding
There have probably been more family heart-to-heart discussions in the kitchen than anywhere else in the home, as meals and food preparation tend to be the central gathering point for most families – especially at the beginning and end of days. Kids love bonding with parents over cooking and it’s also the place to plan your day – making quick notes at the breakfast table.
Children often like to sit at a kitchen table doing homework while a parent prepares dinner rather, than being in a remote part of the house to work as they can ask for help and discuss ideas. And where are the first efforts at children art displayed? On the fridge of course!
The Party always ends up in the Kitchen
The kitchen is where meals are prepared – but why then at parties do people congregate in the kitchen? The excuse is that they pop in to pour more drinks – but what they really like is the feeling of warmth and being able to socialise where most often the hosts are busy catering to their guests!
And we all know than when the majority of the guests have left the party – the late stayers all gather in the kitchen to swap stories and relax.
Everyone’s Room
It is the one room in the house that family and friends all use together – unlike special off limits areas like someone’s bedroom or the bathroom.
Making your Kitchen the True Heart of your Home
When planning your kitchen make sure there is enough counter space as much of it quickly gets consumed with appliances, and we all know that a cluttered kitchen is not ideal! Work with your builder to have smart storage solutions, invest in pantry space and cabinets above the counter height so you are not rummaging around in deep cupboards, struggling to reach those items at the back.
You can rarely have enough powerpoints in a kitchen as aside from all the appliances, it’s a space where people will insist on charging their phones and laptops despite your best efforts to keep your kitchen clean and uncluttered!
A common and popular feature is the inclusion of a kitchen table or breakfast counter with comfortable seating, and if you can, make sure your design let in lots of natural light. An air-conditioning unit in the kitchen certainly makes food preparation in the hot Australian summers much less of a chore.
The kitchen light does not need to be an industrial neon strip – rather install focus lights to illuminate the work space on the underside of the above-the- counter cupboards, while in the center of the kitchen you can install something like some pendant lights, to give the space some charm and mood lighting.
