Custom designing a home means working from the ground up on a home that is suited to your particular needs rather than trying to fit your lifestyle into a pre-existing or standard home design.
Benefits of Custom Design
Custom designing your home means it can be built to suit the parcel of land – taking full advantage of the prevailing winds, the movement of the sun from summer to winter and the views. By using these natural factors it means you will be able to reduce energy costs in heating or cooling the home.
A bespoke home can be designed around certain activities, interests and lifestyles. A family with children will have very different design needs to a retired couple. With custom design and building you get to (within your budget!) specify the finishes and fittings instead of having to choose from a standard range that may fall within a certain category or range of home.
A custom-built home doesn’t necessarily have to be, or imply something that is large and luxurious – it simply means that it has been designed and built based on the specific needs, wants and lifestyle of the new owner.
Aim for Convenience and Functionality to Suit your Lifestyle
Try to incorporate convenience and features that suit your lifestyle. It may be an external shower to wash off sand from your regular weekends at the beach. It might be specific storage for bikes or other exercise equipment due to your healthy and active lifestyle.
It may even be the location of bedrooms relative to each other, or living areas should you have a growing family and need a combination of quiet space for a baby, and entertainment space for growing children.
Don’t Just Focus on the Inside
The Gold Coast climate and lifestyle is as much about outdoor living as indoor living – especially in those warmer, holiday months.
Think about how you want the spaces in your home to interact and connect with your outdoor areas, be they entertaining areas, a pool or tropical garden and lawn for the children. For example – do you want to be able to see the children playing outside from the kitchen?
If you are planning on a large outdoor entertaining space, can you save space on the internal dining room?
General Custom Homes
On the other hand, you may have found a plan or home that is 80% perfect, but just needs some minor modifications to make it perfect for YOU. This is what some building contractors may call a ‘general custom designed home’ – one where they have the general plans ready, but the client can not only modify some elements, but can also choose from a number of approved ranges of fixtures and fittings which the contractor knows the supplier has in stock.
The client may also choose to add an extra bedroom, garage or study. It enables clients to have a certain input into the design of the home whilst remaining largely within the scope, budget and timeframe of the original (general) plan.
