Australians have fallen in love with the Hamptons inspired style that suits our Gold Coast weather and lifestyle so perfectly.
The Hamptons is composed of small communities strung out along the beaches near Southampton and East Hampton on the South Fork of Eastern Long Island in New York State. The upmarket area has become famous for the elegant homes that provide weekend and holiday getaways for wealthy New Yorkers, who want to escape to a more gentle seaside lifestyle.
The Hamptons elegant beach house look is taking The Gold Coast by storm – it just makes sense. We are coastal, we love the laid back yet elegant architecture and furnishings that so perfectly fit our lifestyle, and we love the predominantly white palette that remains classy and fresh when other decorating trends have come and gone.
Creating the Look and Feel
To add interest various tones are introduced into the white theme like natural stone greys, sand, and blues ranging from duck egg blue to aqua. Timber flooring provides a contrast to the all white walls and can range from a limed oak or beechwood, to a darker natural timber. Jute or sisal can be used as a floor covering and for those who prefer carpeting it is best to keep to a light grey or beach-sand palette.
Furniture is often white to pale grey, light natural wood, or rattan with some pieces in a distressed white to keep the feeling casual, and plain natural cottons and linens are used for upholstery.
Your Hamptons Kitchen
In the kitchen white cabinets are the norm featuring areas of open shelving or glass fronted cabinets that create interest with a display of glassware featuring a range of sea greens and blues. Kitchen lighting tends towards pendant lights in chrome and glass to keep the feeling light. Counter tops feature natural looking light grained marble, granite or engineered stone and add interest through texture. In true beach house style there should be a kitchen table or island where people can linger to discuss their day over a snack, when they aren’t outdoors.
Bringing the Outside In
True Hamptons style keeps the indoor and outdoor spaces linked by using the same type of colour palette – white or grey outdoor furniture may have natural sand or grey cushions or a jaunty blue and white stripe to keep the ocean side theme in context, while inside generously proportioned sofas invite occupants to recline and enjoy the holiday lifestyle, relaxing against plump cushions that reflect the various shades of the ocean or have fresh ocean inspired prints.
